Staying Active Safely After 40

Episode Notes:

In this episode of the Dohnal Chiropractic podcast, Dr. Chris Dohnal tackles one of the most common questions he hears in his Nashville practice: how to stay active and feel your best after 40.

Dr. Dohnal breaks down why your body’s needs shift as you age and what that means for your workouts, recovery, and overall movement habits.

Whether you’re a weekend warrior or just trying to stay consistent, this episode is packed with practical guidance to help you thrive — not just survive — your active lifestyle well into your 40s and beyond.

Hey there, and welcome back. I’m Doctor Chris Dohnal, and you’re listening to the Dohnal Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Nashville, Tennessee. Today we’re talking about something I get asked about all the time in the office. Staying active after forty. And I don’t mean just surviving your workouts. I mean actually thriving, feeling good, and keeping your body moving for the long haul.

Here’s the thing. Turning forty doesn’t mean slowing down. It just means your body starts giving you more feedback than it used to. And honestly, that feedback is really useful if you know how to listen to it.

So let’s talk about what’s actually happening. As we move through our forties and beyond, a few things start to shift. Recovery takes a little longer. Joints can feel stiffer in the morning. Muscles that used to bounce back overnight might need an extra day. This isn’t a sign that something is broken. It’s just biology. And the good news is, there’s a lot you can do to work with your body instead of against it.

Now, here’s what I hear a lot from patients. They say, I used to be able to do this no problem, and now I’m paying for it for a week. Sound familiar? That usually comes down to a few key things. Warm-up, load management, and recovery. Let me break those down for you.

Warming up becomes genuinely important after forty, not optional. Your joints need time to get lubricated, your muscles need blood flow, and your nervous system needs to wake up before you ask it to perform. Even five to ten minutes of light movement before your workout can make a real difference in how you feel during and after. Think gentle walking, some hip circles, shoulder rolls, things that get your body ready without wearing it out before you even start.

Load management is really about being honest with yourself. Maybe you can lift heavy, but can you lift heavy three days in a row and still feel okay? For a lot of people over forty, spacing out intense sessions and mixing in lower impact activity is the sweet spot. Swimming, walking, cycling, yoga, these aren’t just for people who can’t handle the hard stuff. They’re genuinely smart choices for keeping your joints healthy over time.

And then there’s recovery. Sleep, hydration, nutrition, they all matter more now than they did at twenty-five. Your body does its repair work when you’re resting. So if you’re skipping sleep to squeeze in more workouts, you might actually be going backward. Give yourself permission to rest. It’s part of the training.

Now, here’s some practical stuff you can start doing right away. Try adding just five minutes of intentional stretching after your workouts, focusing on your hips, hamstrings, and lower back. Those areas tend to tighten up the most and cause problems down the line. Stay hydrated throughout the day, not just during exercise. And if you’ve been sedentary for a while and you’re just getting back into things, start with thirty minutes of walking most days. That alone is incredibly powerful for your spine, your heart, and your overall wellbeing.

Now, when should you come see me or another chiropractor? If you’re noticing pain that lingers more than a few days, or if you’ve got recurring stiffness, numbness, or tingling anywhere, those are signs worth getting evaluated. A lot of people wait too long and what could have been a simple fix becomes a longer road to recovery. Chiropractic care is great for keeping your spine moving well, reducing tension in the muscles and joints, and helping you stay active without constantly managing pain.

At Dohnal Chiropractic, we work with a lot of active adults right here in Nashville who just want to keep doing the things they love, whether that’s running, hiking, playing with their grandkids, or hitting the gym. You don’t have to accept pain as part of getting older. There are real, practical things we can do together.

Thanks so much for tuning in today. I really appreciate you spending a few minutes with me. If anything I said resonated with you, or if you’ve got questions, reach out to us at Dohnal Chiropractic.
