Hey there, Nashville. Doctor Christopher donnuhl here from donnuhl Chiropractic, and today I want to talk about something super simple that can make a huge difference for your spine. We’re talking about water. Plain old hydration.

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Water? Really? But here’s the thing… most people have no idea how much their spine depends on staying hydrated. And I see the effects of dehydration in my office every single day.

So let me break this down for you.

Your spine isn’t just a stack of bones. Between each vertebra, you’ve got these amazing cushions called discs. Think of them like little jelly donuts. The outer part is tough and fibrous, and the inside… that’s the important part… it’s mostly water. Actually, about seventy to eighty percent water when you’re young and healthy.

These discs are your spine’s shock absorbers. When you walk, run, bend over, or even just sit… your discs are compressing and expanding, protecting your vertebrae from grinding against each other. But here’s the catch. They need water to do their job.

When you’re dehydrated, those discs can’t hold their shape as well. They get flatter, stiffer, less flexible. And that means more pressure on your spine, more strain on the surrounding muscles, and yeah… more pain.

You know what I hear a lot? People come in and say, “Doc, my back is killing me by the end of the day.” And when we talk about their habits, they’re drinking maybe one or two glasses of water all day long. That’s not enough.

Here’s what happens. Overnight, while you’re sleeping, your discs actually rehydrate a little bit. They soak up fluid and expand. That’s why you’re slightly taller in the morning than at night. But during the day, gravity and movement squeeze that fluid out. If you’re not replacing it… well, your discs are running on empty by afternoon.

And it’s not just your discs. Your muscles need water too. Dehydrated muscles cramp up easier, they’re weaker, and they don’t support your spine the way they should. It’s all connected.

So what can you do about it? Start simple. Aim for about half your body weight in ounces of water each day. If you weigh one hundred sixty pounds, that’s about eighty ounces. Sounds like a lot, but spread it out through the day and it’s totally doable.

Here’s a trick that works for my patients. Get a water bottle you actually like… something that holds about thirty ounces. Fill it up first thing in the morning and finish it by lunch. Fill it again and finish it by dinner. That’s your baseline right there.

And listen, if you’re active, if you’re out in this Tennessee heat, if you’re drinking coffee all day… you need even more. Coffee’s great, I love it too, but it doesn’t count toward your hydration goal.

Now, I’m not saying water is a magic cure for back pain. But I am saying that when my patients start hydrating properly, they often notice their pain improves. Their adjustments hold better. Their recovery speeds up. Everything just works better when your body has what it needs.
