Hey there, and welcome back. I’m doctor Chris Dohnal, and this is the Dohnal Chiropractic podcast, coming to you from right here in Nashville, Tennessee. Today we’re tackling something I think is really important. We’re going to talk about what chiropractors actually do, because there are a lot of myths floating around out there, and I want to clear the air.

Now, here’s the thing. I hear it all the time in my office. People come in and they say, “Doctor Dohnal, I wasn’t sure if I should come see you because I heard chiropractors just crack your back and send you home.” And I totally get it. If you’ve never been to a chiropractor before, or if you only know what you’ve seen in movies or heard from a friend, it can seem a little mysterious. So let’s break this down together.

The first big myth is that chiropractors only treat back pain. I hear this one constantly. Yes, we absolutely help people with back pain, and we’re really good at it. But that’s just one piece of what we do. The spine connects to everything. Your nervous system runs through it. So when something is off in the spine, it can affect your neck, your shoulders, your hips, even your headaches. I work with people dealing with tension headaches, with sciatica, with shoulder problems, with knee pain. Chiropractic care is really about how your whole musculoskeletal system is functioning, and how that affects the way you feel and move every single day.

Now, here’s the second myth, and this one is a big one. A lot of people think that adjustments are dangerous or that they’re going to get hurt. I completely understand where that fear comes from. But the truth is, chiropractic adjustments are one of the safest forms of conservative care available. We spend years in graduate school learning anatomy, biomechanics, and hands-on technique before we ever work with a patient. Every adjustment is tailored to that specific person. And by the way, that popping sound you sometimes hear? That’s just gas releasing from the joint. It’s nothing to be afraid of.

Here’s the third myth, and honestly, this one matters a lot to me personally. Some people think chiropractic care is just a temporary fix. That you come in, feel better for a day or two, and then you’re right back where you started. But real chiropractic care is about more than just pain relief in the moment. It’s about figuring out why you’re hurting in the first place and helping your body work better over time. We look at your posture, your movement patterns, the way you sit at work, how you sleep. We’re trying to get to the root of the problem, not just put a bandage on it.

So what can you do starting today? First, pay attention to your posture. Especially if you’re sitting at a desk or looking down at your phone for long periods of time. Simple awareness goes a long way. Second, keep moving. Gentle stretching and walking are two of the best things you can do for a healthy spine. And third, don’t wait until the pain is unbearable to seek help. Small problems are a lot easier to address than ones that have been building up for months or years.

Now, if you’ve been dealing with neck or back pain, headaches, or just that nagging stiffness that won’t go away, I want to encourage you to come in and let us take a look. A lot of times people are surprised by how much better they feel after just a few visits. And we always start with a thorough evaluation so we know exactly what’s going on before we do anything.
